Local Bar & Community News

    Time: 6-8 p.m.
    Date:April 11, 2018
Location: Schulze Grand Atrium, University of St. Thomas School of Law

The Night of Distinction is an opportunity to discuss pertinent current issues that affect the communities we live in. The theme for this year is, "Crack v. Opioids: The Politics of Race and Addiction." The Honorable Judge Pamela Alexander of the Hennepin County Fourth Judicial District, will be our keynote. Judge Alexander has been a judge in Hennepin County since 1983. She has spent her career advocating for fairness for marginalized groups in the criminal justice system. During the "war on drugs" Judge Alexander continued to speak out against sentencing disparities of crack cocaine users vs power cocaine users. This year's theme will explore the "war on drugs" and the criminalized response to addicts of color, particularly Black people in comparison to the more recent Opioid crises which mainstream media and government has often depicted as an issue affecting the White community. Our keynote and panelists will explore said topic, in-depth. This will be an open and candid discussion on the influence.

    3:30-5:30 p.m. Stinson Leonard Street

Many lawyers are unaware that bar associations have the potential to offer opportunities to make a difference in addressing bias in the legal profession and in the administration of justice. This free program will focus on women, communities of color, LGBT lawyers, and lawyers with disabilities, to identify those opportunities. Bar involvement can help attorneys from traditionally-underrepresented populations develop the critical leadership skills needed to make a difference in challenging bias.

    Speakers:

    • Medaria Arradono, Chief of Police, City of Minneapolis
    • Ann Anaya, Assistant Chief Diversity Officer at 3M
    • Judge Leo Brisbois, U.S. Magistrate Judge
    • Bryan Browning, Shareholder at Bassford Remele
    • Irene Kao, Intergovernmental Relations Counsel at The League of Minnesota Cities
    • Vildan Teske, Partner at Teske, Katz, Kitzer & Rochel, PLLP

This promises to be an exciting CLE presentation, featuring diverse leaders from across the Minnesota legal and justice community. Two Elimination of Bias CLE credit applied for.

The new NAAAP Minnesota chapter would like to welcome you, your colleagues, friends and family to hear our journey and see our vision and strategy for all Asian-Pacific Islanders (APIs) in the Twin Cities — and how we will advance professional development opportunities for all APIs, whether in the private or public sector, together.

Hear from our board members on why this work is so important to them and get answers to your questions about the new NAAAP Minnesota chapter — this will be a moderated panel-style conversation.

What this is not — an event to trade 20 business cards that will collect dust on your desk.

What this is — a moment, a call to action, for this API community to come together and grow together.
