    2017 MWL Rosalie Wahl Leadership Lecture to be held on the evening of Thursday, November 9th, 2017 at the Marriott City Center (30 South Seventh Street, downtown Minneapolis). The general reception will begin at 5:00 p.m. Dinner will begin at 6:00 p.m., and the program will begin at approximately 6:30 p.m. Lauren Stiller Rikleen is Wahl Lecture keynote speaker.

    The judges and staff of Minnesota’s Second Judicial District are inviting members of the public to a community listening session in St. Paul the evening of Wednesday, October 11. The free, open-to-the-public event will be held at the Wilder Center, located at 451 Lexington Parkway North in Saint Paul, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

    During the event, attendees will meet in small groups with judges and court staff, and have the opportunity to provide face-to-face input about Minnesota’s judicial system, the work of the Second Judicial District, and their personal experiences in Ramsey County District Court. Following these discussions, each of the judges will report on the key themes that emerged in their small groups, and court leaders will then discuss how the Second Judicial District will use the input provided at the event.

    Sold Out: Affordable Housing at Risk

    Affordable housing is under constant threat from changing economic forces and urban development that break up vital communities. Low income residents have fewer and fewer options, and local businesses and schools must deal with the impact of losing those families. 
     
    Join the ACS Minneapolis-St. Paul Lawyer Chapter and the Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul for a film screening of Sold Out: Affordable Housing at Risk. With alarming frequency, individuals, households and whole communities are being displaced as a result of a growing wave of real estate investments upscaling formerly affordable apartments across the Twin Cities region. Produced by Twin Cities PBS in partnership w
    ith the Minnesota Housing Partnership, this new 60-minute documentary lifts up the stories of affected residents, highlights the community impacts of displacement and showcases the urgent need to preserve affordable housing.

    The film will be followed by a discussion featuring these distinguished panelists:

    • Yusef Mgeni, Vice President and Political Action Chair at the Minnesota/Dakotas Area Conference of the NAACP
    • Sue Watlov Phillips, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Interfaith Council on Affordable Housing and Vice President of National Coalition for the Homeless

     Catching the Big Fish and Keeping It:

    Strategies for Working with Large Institutional Clients

    How do solo and small firm practitioners successfully get work from larger institutional client companies and keep the business flowing to them?  The legal marketplace has been disrupted as companies that once hired only the biggest and most expensive firms are now frequently turning to smaller firms for both quality and value.  This experienced panel will share insights based on time spent as in-house and outside counsel about effective marketing strategies, the qualities and factors that matter aside from price, and how to get retained and stay competitive, and more.

    Moderator:  Judy M. Lam, Litigation Partner, Kumagai Law Group, a small minority owned firm.  After years of practice in larger firms, Judy is seeing great opportunity for small firms to capture work from institutional clients. Her litigation practice focuses on complex business and real estate disputes.  Judy is also a mediator and arbitrator.

    Dan Kang, Senior Counsel at Phenomenex, a global technology leader committed to developing novel analytical chemistry solutions that solve the separation and purification challenges of researchers in industrial, government and academic laboratories.  Mr. Kang has prior experience working at a boutique business litigation firm.

    Linda Shi, General Counsel and head of compliance at 50onRed and cofounder of Likuma Laboratories.  Ms. Shi’s practice concentrates on technology, privacy, and intellectual property law and the real-life applications to clients ranging from international corporations to early stage startups.

    Hoyt Zia, retired as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for Hawaiian Airlines, Inc. Mr. Zia also has experience practicing as an attorney in in law firms and in-house with Motorola, Inc. and Amfac/JMB Hawaii, Inc. Additionally, he served in the Clinton Administration as Chief Counsel for Export Administration, Department of Commerce.
