    A volunteer-based Asian Community Safety Escort group has been established for the Saint Paul area to match people willing to escort or chaperone with other vulnerable members of the Asian community in light of recent attacks that happen to vulnerable, “easy” targets, such as the elderly walking alone at bus stops.     The MN China Friendship Garden Society welcomes visitors to the China Friendship Garden at Phalen Park, a 1.2 acre site currently consisting of the Xiang Jiang Pavilion (completed in 2018-2019), Hmong Heritage Wall (completed in 2018), and the West Entrance Archway (completed in 2019). The China Friendship Garden is a sister city collaboration initiated by the MN China Friendship Garden Society, the City of St. Paul Department of Parks and Recreation, Payne Phalen Community Council, with the City of Changsha (Hunan Province, China), the Changsha People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, and the Changsha Yanghu Wetland Park (Phalen Park's sister park) in China.

    The MN China Friendship Garden Society is seeking donations for its 2021 New Year Matching Gift Challenge to help fund the next phase of building the Friendship Garden. All donations will be matched by the society's founders, board, and advisors up to $76,850.     Join the American Constitution Society (ACS) Minneapolis-St. Paul Lawyer Chapter for a presentation examining the nation’s history of enacting and enforcing federal criminal hate crime laws, featuring the Honorable Mark Kappelhoff of the Minnesota Fourth Judicial District. This event will trace this history from the civil war reconstruction era to the Jim Crow era to the enactment of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. 1.0 CLE credit is pending.     The Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA) New Lawyers Section, along with the Hennepin County Bar Association (HCBA), Minnesota Women Lawyers (MWL), Federal Bar Association (FBA) Minnesota Chapter, and Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers (MABL) are co-sponsoring a “rotating roundtable” event celebrating trailblazing women attorneys and judges. This event is the latest in a series of The Vintage events, which brings together experienced and new lawyers to share stories, learn, and preserve the history of the Bar.

    Trailblazing women lawyers and judges will share insights about their successes and overcoming adversity. Attendees will hear from multiple speakers in small, rotating breakout room groups for a more personalized discussion and Q&A.     The Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA) is holding a webinar with nationally-renowned career development consultant, Ida Abbott, moderated by Annamarie Daley of Jones Day, to discuss mentoring in the virtual world, when hallway chats and in-person coffees are difficult, if not impossible. Ida will discuss the importance of mentoring in today’s socially-distanced environment, how to be the best mentor, and how to get the most out of a mentoring session.     AMTA is a nonprofit that hosts trial advocacy competitions for undergraduate students, serving nearly 6,000 students who attend institutions ranging from community collects to research universities. These competitions use courtroom trial experience to teach critical and analytical thinking skills to students. AMTA is hosting virtual tournaments on all weekends in February and on the weekends of March 13 and March 20. Each trial takes approximately 2.5 hours to argue, and volunteers will attend a 30-minute virtual training session on the Thursday before the tournament.

    Maslon UPLIFT is a mock trial program serving eighth grade students who reflect the rich diversity of the Twin Cities. UPLIFT offers students engaging opportunities to learn from volunteer attorneys about the legal profession, criminal justice, and the court system. This year, UPLIFT will be taking place virtually this spring. Although there will not be a mock trial at the end of the program, UPLIFT will break students into groups with two coaches for weekly meetings.

    St. Louis Park UPLIFT will meet on Wednesdays, 4:00-5:00 pm, March 3-May 5. Columbia Heights UPLIFT is still being scheduled, but will likely take place on Thursdays, 3:30-4:30 pm in April. For more information or to become a volunteer, please emailuplift@maslon.com.

    Amid rising reports of discrimination from the Asian American community, Governor Walz and Lt. Governor Flanagan launched a Discrimination Helpline. You can call the Discrimination Helpline at 1-833-454-0148 or submit this online form. The helpline is staffed Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Translation services are available.
