MNAPABA Statement Addressing Racial Profiling and Community Impact
The Minnesota Asian Pacific American Bar Association (MNAPABA) issues this statement to reaffirm its commitment to the safety, dignity, and constitutional rights of Asian Pacific Americans and all immigrant communities in Minnesota.
On Wednesday, January 7, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed Renee Good in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones. Press reports indicate that U.S. Department of Justice is not investigating the tragedy. Local authorities have raised concerns about access to evidence and investigative independence.
The deployment of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) personnel, including ICE agents, into Minnesota coupled with the shooting have escalated fear and apprehension not only within immigrant communities, but also among communities of color and other residents across Minnesota and nationwide. Reports from local community members describe interactions in which people of color—including U.S. citizens and lawful residents—have been stopped, questioned, or detained for prolonged periods of time without clear, individualized suspicion of unlawful conduct.
We are especially concerned by local reports that federal agents have gone door-to-door in some neighborhoods and questioned residents about the presence of Asian neighbors. Such generalized inquiries raise grave concerns about racial profiling of Asian Pacific Americans and other communities of color.
We emphasize that U.S. citizens and lawful immigrants must not be subject to detention or questioning solely on the basis of how they look, where they live, or what language they speak. Such actions are incompatible with constitutional principles, endanger the public, and diminish trust in law enforcement and the rule of law. Minnesota is home to a vibrant community, which adds to the strength and rich tapestry of the state and nation. MNAPABA reaffirms that the dignity, safety, and constitutional protections of all people must be respected and safeguarded at all times.
MNAPABA remains committed to equipping its members with resources, education, and opportunities to engage constructively in these efforts and help our communities overcome this time of injustice. It is heartening to see individuals and organizations across Minnesota come together in solidarity and support of affected communities, but it cannot stop here. We ask everyone to remain vigilant in safeguarding constitutional rights, to share accurate information within their professional and community networks, and to support individuals and families navigating uncertainty through lawful and peaceful means. We are resilient and always will be.
