    On April 2, Asians from across Minnesota will gather at the Capitol to advocate for their communities, meet with legislators, and learn about the legislative process. The day will start with a brief training about how to talk to legislators and go over key priority issues. After the training, attendees will have the opportunity to meet with their Minnesota State Legislators to discuss issues that matter to them and their communities. This event will go from 9am to 4pm.

    Writer, Professor, and Director of the Immigration History Center at the University of Minnesota Erika Lee will hold an event for her newest book, America for Americans: A History of Xenophobia in the United States, on March 18th in St. Paul.     Our 2020 Keynote Speaker: Claudia Romo Edelman

    This year, we have the honor of hosting Ms. Claudia Romo Edelman, founder of the New York-based non-profit We Are All Human Foundation and formerly of the Executive Office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Claudia is dedicated to advancing the agenda of diversity, inclusion, and equity through developing and hosting events on a global, regional, and national scale, along with conducting and publishing research.

    A Mexican-Swiss Diplomat, Claudia is also a Founder and Co-Host of ‘Global GoalsCast,’ a podcast distributed by CBS News Digital, which highlights global progress through the stories of champions making a difference.

    Through an extraordinary background with global organizations, including the United Nations and the World Economic Forum, Claudia has, for 25 years, worked on humanitarian causes with agencies such as UNICEF, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), and the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. She is an advocate for social causes, a journalist, and a diplomat with a track record on shaping public opinion, building the narrative on perception change, creating global campaigns and mobilization efforts, and leading partnership activation.     On behalf of the Minnesota Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, you are invited to join us for a panel discussion led by Attorney General Keith Ellison. The discussion topic will be on the challenges encountered by diverse attorneys as well the importance of cultural competency in the legal profession. Attorney General Ellison will be joined by two other prominent attorneys in the community. 

    The event will be held at the Minneapolis Club on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at 4:30 p.m. There will be complimentary appetizers and beverages. FBA membership is not required as this is a free event open to everyone.

    Are you familiar with the Dakota County Court System? Do you have experience to share? Join staff from the District Court at Dakota County to speak about what's happening in the courts. This is an opportunity for people to voice concerns, share suggestions, and help the courts understand the court experience and those entering it.

    The evening includes a meal, general information about the district court system, and small group discussions. The event is free for participants. Pre-registration is appreciated.

    The next training for the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota’s Pro Bono Citizenship Project, which will be hosted by Ballard Spahr, LLP.  Attorneys who are interested in volunteering with ILCM’s Citizenship Pro Bono Project, and have not yet attended one of ILCM’s citizenship trainings can register to attend the CLE

    Immigration law and policy remain major issues in the United States and there is continued uncertainty for the future with the current administration. This CLE will bring attention to these developments and provide an opportunity for successful immigrant attorneys among us to speak about their careers, going through law school in the United States, obtaining a Minnesota law license, and practicing in different settings. The panel discussion will allow speakers to share successes and challenges as well as discuss implications that possible changes in law and policy could have on future immigrant attorneys.

    Lunch and registration begin at 11:15 a.m.
